Satellite imagery has once again shown us that Mother Nature might just have a sense of humor—or at least an eye for design. A fascinating natural formation in West Darfur, Sudan has recently gone viral, capturing global attention for its uncanny resemblance to a pair of human lips.
Nicknamed “Lip Hill” or the “Lips of Sudan,” this bizarre yet beautiful landform is located near the small town of Arawala (coordinates: 12°22′13.3″N, 23°19′20.2″E). Although it first appeared in a 2012 Google Earth snapshot, the image has resurfaced and is now circulating widely across social media.
A Geologic Wonder – Lips of Sudan
The formation measures approximately 900 meters long and 350 meters wide. Its realistic shape and natural color contrast—a blend of reddish-pink earth flanked by sparse vegetation create the illusion of soft, shaded lips. It’s so symmetrical and defined that many online users initially believed the image was digitally altered.

However, geologists assure us it’s all-natural. Experts believe that the formation is the result of a resistant rock layer (likely a geological dike) that eroded much more slowly than its surroundings. Over millions of years, wind, water, and sedimentary shaping gave rise to the striking lip-like appearance we see today.
Viral Fame
Social media platforms have exploded with memes, art, and even fashion references to the Lips of Sudan. Some users have humorously suggested that the hill deserves its own passport or cosmetic deal, while others are calling for its protection as a geological landmark.
Despite the attention, the site remains untouched by tourism or development, accessible only through satellite imagery. But thanks to its new viral fame, Sudan’s Lip Hill might just become one of the most famous natural “features” on Earth—no filter required.
