Japan’s AI powered dating initiative has reached a new milestone after helping 265 couples get married since its launch in 2024. The matchmaking platform, introduced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to encourage marriage and address the country’s declining birth rate.
The service, known as TOKYO Enmusubi, officially launched in September 2024. Authorities introduced the platform after a survey found that nearly 70 percent of people interested in marriage were not actively taking part in matchmaking activities.
AI matchmaking encourages serious relationships
The government designed the platform for people who genuinely wanted to get married. Applicants had to prove they were legally single and complete an online interview before joining the service.
According to official data released this month, around 36,000 people applied to join the platform. After the verification process, about 16,000 people became registered members as of June 30, 2026.
The platform has also helped 760 couples enter serious relationships. Among them, 265 couples have already married, highlighting the growing success of the AI based matchmaking system.
Officials believe the platform encourages users to meet potential partners by providing compatibility assessments. The AI evaluates users and presents compatibility levels to help them decide whether to meet someone.
Users share successful experiences
One user, identified by the pseudonym Turtle, said she joined the app shortly before turning 40 because she viewed it as her last opportunity to find a life partner.
She explained that after meeting several people through the service, she met her future husband at the end of August. They entered a serious relationship in September, and he proposed in December.
Another user, using the name Skytree, said the AI compatibility score gave him confidence to meet people recommended by the platform.
He said his girlfriend received a perfect compatibility rating through the system, which encouraged him to pursue the relationship.
The success of the platform comes as Japan continues to face demographic challenges. Government figures released earlier this year showed that the number of babies born to Japanese nationals fell to a record low of 671,236 in 2025.

The country also recorded about 1.6 million deaths during the same period. Japan’s fertility rate declined slightly to 1.14, although the number of marriages increased compared with the previous year.
Japanese authorities continue to explore new ways to address population decline. Digital services such as AI powered matchmaking have become part of broader efforts to encourage marriage and family formation.
The latest figures suggest that technology can play a supportive role in helping people build meaningful relationships. As more users join the platform, officials will continue to monitor its impact on marriage rates and Japan’s long term demographic goals.
