Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer be supported on Android devices running the KitKat operating system (OS) or older versions, as announced by its parent company, Meta. The decision comes as part of an effort to enhance app functionality and bolster security measures.
Why Older Devices Are Being Dropped
Meta has highlighted the challenges posed by outdated hardware and software in keeping up with WhatsApp’s constantly evolving innovations. New features such as encryption updates, multi-device support, advanced video calling, and AI functionalities require modern systems to function efficiently.
Older devices often fail to support these new features and lack the ability to adequately protect user data. Without necessary software and security updates, such devices become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats, leading to reduced app functionality.
iPhone Users Also Affected
While Android users face changes at the start of the year, iPhone users with outdated software have until May 5, 2025, to update their systems. WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running on iOS 15.1 or lower versions after this deadline.
This means that owners of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will need to either upgrade their devices or update their operating systems to newer versions to continue using the app seamlessly.
What Users Should Do
To avoid losing access to WhatsApp:
- Android Users: Check your OS version and, if possible, update to a newer version of Android or switch to a modern device.
- iPhone Users: Update your iOS to a version above 15.1 or consider upgrading to a newer iPhone model.
