Pakistanis could experience an unusually high number of holidays in May 2026, with estimates suggesting up to 14 or 15 days off during the month. The expected holidays include public holidays, weekends, Youm e Takbir, and the anticipated Eid ul Adha break.
The month is set to begin with a long weekend as Labor Day falls on Friday, May 1. This will combine with the weekend on May 2 and 3, giving both public and private sector employees a three day break at the start of the month.
Eid ul Adha and additional holidays
More holidays are likely toward the end of May due to Eid ul Adha. However, the exact dates will depend on the sighting of the Zilhaj moon.
If the moon is sighted on May 17, Eid ul Adha is expected to fall between May 27 and 29. In this case, when combined with the weekend, people could enjoy a five day break.
On the other hand, if the moon is not sighted and the lunar month completes 30 days, Eid may be observed from May 28 to 30. This scenario would extend the holiday period further by including Sunday, May 31.
Possibility of extended break
There is also speculation that the government may announce an additional public holiday on Monday, May 25. If this happens, it would connect with the weekend on May 23 and 24, creating an extended holiday period for many citizens.
Such an announcement could increase the total number of holidays even further. Making May one of the most relaxed months of the year in terms of work schedules.
Impact on daily life and planning
An extended holiday period can provide opportunities for travel, family gatherings, and celebrations. However, it may also affect business operations and public services, especially if multiple consecutive days off are confirmed.
