The Sindh government has issued a strict directive to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to immediately halt the breeding of exotic animals at Karachi Zoo, particularly big cats such as lions. The order came from Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah during a high-level meeting addressing the condition of exotic animals, zoo management practices, and future planning.
Shah emphasized that the government prioritizes animal welfare and responsible wildlife management. He highlighted the dangers of uncontrolled breeding. Which can lead to overcrowding, health issues for animals, and potential safety concerns for visitors. The recent birth of three lion cubs at the zoo raised alarms about the facility’s capacity to manage exotic species properly.
Focus on Scientific and Humane Practices
Zoo and KMC officials have been instructed to immediately implement measures to stop further breeding. They are also required to develop a time-bound plan in consultation with qualified wildlife experts. Shah stressed that expert guidance is essential to ensure that all measures follow humane. Scientifically sound, and internationally accepted conservation standards.

Additionally, the Sindh government has ordered a detailed assessment of all exotic animals currently housed at Karachi Zoo. The review will examine their health, living conditions, and long-term care needs. Shah reiterated that the priority should remain on responsible wildlife management, discouraging unnecessary captivity and breeding of exotic species.
The Sindh government’s intervention underscores its commitment to modern animal welfare standards and sustainable zoo management. Authorities hope these steps will balance conservation efforts with the health and safety of both animals and visitors.
