Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate efforts for local battery production to support electric vehicles and solar energy storage. The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s energy security and reduce dependence on imports.
The directive came during a high level meeting focused on energy planning and future infrastructure. Officials discussed steps to improve the adoption of electric vehicles and enhance renewable energy systems across the country.
Focus on EV infrastructure and battery access
The prime minister emphasized the need to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure. He instructed relevant departments to ensure faster development so that more users can shift to electric transport.
In addition, he called for a clear policy framework to make battery storage more accessible. This includes solutions for storing surplus electricity generated through solar power systems.
Authorities aim to create a system where excess solar energy can be stored efficiently and used when needed. This approach will help stabilize the energy supply and reduce waste.
Push for local manufacturing
The government also plans to promote local manufacturing of high quality batteries. Officials believe this step will reduce reliance on imported products and support domestic industry growth.
By encouraging local production, the government aims to create new economic opportunities while strengthening the energy sector. It will also help lower costs for consumers over time.

The prime minister further directed that future government transport procurement should focus only on electric vehicles. This includes electric buses and motorcycles, signaling a clear shift toward environmentally friendly transport solutions.
Early projects and future plans
Officials informed the meeting that work on two pilot projects for grid level battery storage is already underway. These projects represent initial steps toward integrating large scale storage solutions into the national power system.
The initiative reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on clean energy and sustainable development. By combining electric mobility with renewable energy storage, the government aims to build a more resilient energy ecosystem.
As these plans move forward, the development of local battery production and infrastructure will play a key role in shaping the country’s energy future.
