On Thursday, the city experienced record-breaking heavy rainfall, which brought much-needed relief from the recent humidity and sultry weather but also caused significant flooding and traffic problems in low-lying areas. The rain began at 4:45 AM and continued uninterrupted until 1:30 PM, varying in intensity from heavy to light. The heaviest rainfall was recorded at the airport, with 360 millimeters, while Pani Wala Talab observed 324 millimeters. Other areas also experienced substantial rainfall, including Gulberg with 214 mm, Laxmi Chowk with 248 mm, and Nishter Town with 312 mm, among others.
Weather Forecast: More Rain to Come
The Meteorological Department has predicted another monsoon spell of torrential rains from Friday to Tuesday, which is expected to affect most parts of the country, including the city. Strong monsoon currents are likely to penetrate from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal into the upper parts until 2nd August. Under the influence of this weather system, rain with wind and thundershowers, some heavy and isolated very heavy falls, are expected in various regions, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, and many more.
Impact and Response
The heavy rainfall on Thursday inundated low-lying areas, causing severe traffic disruptions. Provincial ministers, the Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner Lahore, Chairman WASA, MD WASA, Chief Traffic Officer, and city district management were actively involved in overseeing water clearance operations. These operations were conducted by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Lahore Waste Management Company, Metropolitan Corporation, and other departments to manage the flooding and restore normalcy.
Punjab Minister for Communication and Works Malik Sohaib Ahmed Barth has requested a report on the health of all hospital buildings, given the extensive flooding. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Rescue 1122, Lahore Electric Supply Company, Traffic Department, Civil Defence, and other departments have advised citizens to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.
Future Precautions and Advice
The upcoming heavy downpour may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of several cities, including Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal, Nowshera, and Peshawar from 2nd to 5th August. Windstorms and lightning associated with the rain may also affect daily routines and could potentially damage weak structures, such as mud houses, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.
Farmers are advised to manage their activities in line with the weather forecast, and travelers and tourists are urged to remain cautious and plan their travels accordingly to avoid any untoward situations during this wet spell.
The city, with its population of over 13 million, has been facing extreme weather fluctuations for the past two months, which experts attribute to climate change. The recent heavy rains have provided some respite but have also highlighted the need for better infrastructure and preparedness to handle such extreme weather events.
