Pakistan has stepped into a central diplomatic role by leading emergency ceasefire negotiations for both Yemen and Lebanon, Reuters reported. The development follows Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating the upcoming US Iran peace talks scheduled to take place at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad.
The federal government has imposed strict security measures around the five star hotel as both US and Iranian delegations prepare to arrive as scheduled despite conflicting reports surrounding the talks.
The Crisis Driving the Urgency
The situation across the Gulf region has deteriorated significantly in recent days. Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz following misinformation spread by the US press regarding President Trump’s stance on Israel’s bombing of Lebanon. The blockade sent oil prices surging to near 100 dollars per barrel earlier today. Furthermore, shipping traffic through the Strait has dropped to less than 10 percent of normal levels since the conflict escalated.
Israel maintains that its ongoing attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon fall outside the scope of Trump’s ceasefire agreement. However, Iran and Pakistan have strongly argued that Lebanon is explicitly included in the truce framework. Several European nations, including Britain and France, have also backed this position publicly.
Violence Escalates in Lebanon
The situation on the ground in Lebanon has grown increasingly dire. On Thursday, the Israeli military reported killing the nephew of Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem, who served as his personal secretary. Airstrikes hit Beirut and multiple towns across southern Lebanon since Wednesday.
The wave of violence has pushed Lebanon into deep chaos. The country declared a national day of mourning and closed state offices in response to the destruction. Emergency crews worked through the night to rescue the injured and recover bodies from buildings collapsed by the strikes. Consequently, the human cost of the ongoing conflict continues to rise sharply with each passing day.
Pakistan’s Role in Expanding the Truce
Pakistan’s mediation efforts now focus on broadening the existing ceasefire framework to explicitly cover both Lebanon and Yemen. All three Gulf countries will feature in the discussions during the upcoming Islamabad talks. A decision on the expanded truce is expected to be announced once the negotiations conclude.

Pakistan’s emergence as a key mediator in this crisis reflects its growing diplomatic standing in the Muslim world and its willingness to engage in complex international conflicts. Moreover, its ability to host both US and Iranian delegations simultaneously underlines the trust both sides place in Pakistan as a neutral and credible facilitator.
The outcome of the Islamabad talks will carry enormous consequences for millions of civilians caught in the crossfire across Lebanon and Yemen. Therefore, the international community is watching Pakistan’s mediation efforts very closely as the negotiations move forward in the coming days.
