Google has started rolling out Gemini Go, a lighter version of its AI assistant designed specifically for Android Go devices. The new release aims to bring advanced AI features to affordable smartphones with limited hardware capabilities.
Gemini Go supports Android Go phones with at least 2GB of RAM and will gradually replace Google Assistant Go on entry level devices. The update reflects Google’s broader effort to expand access to artificial intelligence across more Android users worldwide.
Gemini Go brings AI features to affordable devices
Google integrated Gemini Go directly into the Google Search app on eligible Android Go smartphones. Users can activate the assistant by long pressing the Home button or the Power key, similar to the experience available on premium Android devices.
The assistant allows users to complete several everyday tasks through voice or text commands. Gemini Go can make phone calls, send text messages, set alarms, create calendar events, and play music.
Users can also ask location based questions such as nearby restaurant searches, travel times, and other local information requests.
Google has additionally included support for uploading photos, documents, and files into chats. This feature gives the AI assistant more context while responding to user questions.
Designed for phones with limited hardware
Gemini Go is optimized for smartphones with lower processing power, smaller storage capacity, and limited memory. The company developed the lighter version to ensure that AI tools remain accessible to users who cannot afford expensive flagship devices.
By reducing hardware requirements, Google aims to make conversational AI available to a wider audience in emerging and budget focused smartphone markets.
The launch also supports Google’s long term transition from Google Assistant to Gemini across Android products and services. The company previously confirmed plans to continue shifting the mobile assistant experience toward Gemini throughout 2026.
Rollout begins gradually across regions
Google confirmed that Gemini Go will roll out gradually, meaning availability may differ depending on device models and regions. Eligible Android Go users are expected to receive access through updates to the Google Search app.
Technology analysts view the move as an important step in making AI tools more widely available on affordable devices. Until now, many advanced AI experiences remained mostly limited to high end smartphones with stronger hardware performance.
