Passengers on board a China Eastern Airlines flight experienced terrifying moments as the aircraft made an emergency descent of over 20,000 feet shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred on June 29, 2025, during a scheduled flight from Shanghai to Fukuoka, Japan.
Just 30 minutes into the journey, the Boeing 737 suddenly dropped from around 32,000 feet to 10,000 feet in a matter of minutes. Oxygen masks were deployed as the cabin pressure dropped, and panic spread among the passengers. Some described the experience as the most frightening moment of their lives.

Flight data shows that the plane stayed at a lower altitude for nearly 30 minutes before safely returning to Shanghai Pudong Airport. No injuries were reported, and all passengers disembarked safely after landing.
China Eastern has not confirmed the exact cause of the descent. But aviation analysts suggest it may have been due to a cabin pressurization issue. An investigation is now underway to determine whether it was a mechanical fault or a safety precaution triggered by onboard systems.
The incident is a reminder of how quickly in-flight emergencies can escalate, even on routine international flights. Despite the panic, the crew responded swiftly, and the pilots executed the emergency landing procedures successfully.
This mid-air scare has raised concerns about aircraft maintenance and passenger safety, especially during flights over international waters. China Eastern has yet to issue a detailed statement but is cooperating with authorities.
