Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has released the trailer for Kesari Chapter 2, a historical film centered around the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. The film focuses on the aftermath of the massacre and the subsequent court case, which followed the British atrocities.
The movie adapts The Case that Shook the Empire: One Man’s Fight for the Truth about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, a book by Raghu and Pushpa Palat. The book details a defamation lawsuit filed against Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair, who exposed the massacre in his book. Nair’s book criticized the British rule in Punjab, leading to the defamation case from Sir Michael O’Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.
The trailer for Kesari Chapter 2 released on Thursday, showing graphic depictions of the massacre. The film stars Akshay Kumar as Nair, portraying his fight against the British colonial powers. R Madhavan plays a British lawyer defending the empire, while Ananya Panday takes on the role of another lawyer involved in the case.
The trailer depicts scenes of violence, with unarmed Indians being shot by British soldiers. Bloodshed appears as people attempt to escape by jumping into a well. The film’s intense visuals aim to recreate the brutality faced by the peaceful protesters at Jallianwala Bagh.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre
The film’s release date is set for April 18, just days after the anniversary of the massacre. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre remains a pivotal event in India’s struggle for independence. In 1919, General Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on an unarmed gathering. The shooting killed hundreds, with many more injured.
The historical drama trend in Bollywood continues with films like Heeramandi and Freedom at Midnight. However, such films often face criticism for fictionalizing events or skewing facts for dramatic effect. Kesari Chapter 2 aims to stay true to the historical context of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy.
