The federal government plans to unveil a significant relief package today (Thursday), according to statements shared by senior officials and government social media accounts.
On Wednesday, the government announced on its official X account that “great news for the nation” would be revealed today, without elaborating on the details. The post included the hashtag ‘Small Eid, Big Gift’, highlighting Eidul Fitr celebrations.
The ruling PML-N party also mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would address the nation today, suggesting he would present “a big gift from the federal government.”
Rana Sanaullah, an aide to the Prime Minister, took to X to confirm the PM’s announcement, referring to it as a major relief package aimed at “defeating Pakistan’s default agenda.”
In his post, Sanaullah expressed optimism, stating, “Stock market surge, remittances increase, and inflation drops—tomorrow, the narrative of despair will end.”
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif joined in, sharing a post that called the announcement “good news,” and claimed it was a result of the government’s hard work and Allah’s blessings since 2022. He refrained from detailing what the relief package entails but assured the public that the “journey of development, progress, and economic revival” would continue.
In late March, Prime Minister Shehbaz’s team secured a new $1.3 billion deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), along with a successful first review of the 37-month bailout program. The IMF confirmed that it had approved a modest reduction in power tariffs, allowing a reduction of Rs1 per unit. This decrease, according to IMF officials, will benefit the public at large.
