Arshad Khan, known as the viral ‘chaiwala’, faces a major issue. Nadra suspends his CNIC and passport. Khan became famous in 2016 when a photo of him pouring tea went viral. The photo spread quickly on social media. His fame grew as a symbol of success from humble beginnings.
However, his identity documents are now blocked by Nadra. This move threatens his career and reputation. Khan, through his lawyer, Barrister Umer Ijaz Gilani, challenges the decision in court. They argue that the action is unlawful and unconstitutional.
Gilani points out that Khan’s family has a history of Pakistani citizenship. He criticizes Nadra’s demand for pre-1978 proof of residency. The lawyer calls this demand baseless and malicious. He stresses that it violates Khan’s rights to dignity, livelihood, and lawful treatment. He claims that the actions of Nadra have been made with mala fide intent.
In response, Nadra and the assistant attorney general question the validity of the case. They argue that Khan has not provided enough proof of his nationality. Despite this, the court issues notices to Nadra and the government. They must respond by April 17. The court also restrains Nadra from taking any further action against Khan until the matter resolves.
This case highlights the importance of due process in nationality matters. It raises concerns about the treatment of citizens by administrative bodies.
