Pakistan is facing a serious energy challenge as gas supply levels fall sharply across the country. Recent data shows that supply has dropped close to 50 percent, creating pressure on multiple sectors that depend on natural gas.
Officials report that gas supply has declined to around 700 million cubic feet per day, compared to nearly 1200 MMCFD before recent regional disruptions. The sharp drop has created a significant shortfall, affecting both industrial and domestic consumers.
Supply disruption linked to global factors
The current crisis is closely linked to disruptions in global liquefied natural gas supply. Tensions in the Middle East have affected shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a key route for energy transport.
Pakistan relies heavily on imported RLNG to meet its energy needs. Any disruption in global supply directly impacts local availability. The recent situation has reduced incoming shipments, putting additional strain on already limited reserves.
The gas shortfall has now exceeded 600 MMCFD, forcing authorities to manage distribution carefully. Officials have reduced supply to several sectors, including power plants and fertilizer units, in order to balance demand.
Impact on power and domestic supply
The shortage has started to affect electricity generation across the country. Gas based power plants are unable to operate at full capacity due to limited fuel supply. This may lead to increased pressure on the power system in the coming weeks.
Domestic consumers are also experiencing reduced gas availability. Authorities are trying to maintain supply during peak meal hours, but overall access remains limited in many areas.
Sui gas officials have indicated that reserves are depleting quickly, which adds to concerns about the sustainability of supply in the short term. The system continues to operate under stress as demand remains high.
The current situation marks a significant shift from last year, when Pakistan had surplus LNG and even canceled several cargoes due to lower demand. The sudden change highlights the volatility of global energy markets and their impact on local supply chains.

Experts suggest that managing imports and diversifying energy sources will remain critical in the future. For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation and adjust supply to manage the ongoing crisis.
As the shortage continues, both industries and households may need to adapt to limited gas availability until supply conditions improve.
