Netflix has partnered with Mojang Studios to create an animated TV series based on the wildly popular Minecraft franchise. While details about the series are still under wraps, Variety reported that it will feature an original story with new characters, offering a fresh perspective on the Minecraft world.
The animation for the Minecraft series will be produced by Netflix’s WildBrain studio. Minecraft, created by Markus Persson, was first released in 2009, with Jens Bergenstein taking over development in 2011. The game has since become the best-selling video game in history, boasting over 300 million copies sold and around 140 million monthly active players as of last year. Minecraft is renowned for its sandbox gameplay, which allows players to unleash their creativity, build cities, and interact with each other.
In addition to the upcoming Netflix series, a Minecraft feature film is also in the works. Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced a movie set to debut in April 2025, starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks. Directed by Jared Hess, the screenplay has been written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. It remains unclear if the film’s team will be involved with the Netflix animated series.
Minecraft is the latest video game to be adapted for television, continuing a trend of popular games making their way to the small screen. Fans of the franchise can look forward to experiencing the Minecraft world in a whole new way through this animated series.
