Natasha Kamal’s Collection Synopsis FPW 2016

For the SS16 runway collection we looked to the tropics for inspiration. The collection is a celebration of summer so we drew reference from bold blooms, leafy botanicals & exotic animal prints. The styling has a hint of Riviera with touches of sixties glamour; from flared trousers, chic head wraps to sunglasses. Hence the collections name, Luxxotica.

The collections easy elegance captures a look that is at once polished and endlessly chic. The collection features shapely fit and flared trousers to fluid pieces in soft earthy tones perfect for the summer.

SS16’s colour focus is an exploration of natural hues, with shades ranging from rich spices to soft pastels. Deep forest greens and feminine blush pinks are key contenders, combining in an unexpected yet complimentary pairing that works in conjunction with the season’s nod to nature. Illuminating pops of colour brighten the all-round aesthetic and offer a simple yet effective way to bring personality to a look.

To infuse a sense of easy elegance into the collection we looked to pure georgettes and chiffons, which provides a sumptuous foundation. While time treasured classics- favorites like silk and net make this seasons most stylish textural duo.

On closer inspection, the SS16 collection boasts a plethora of fine details, which are both subtle and striking. Rainforest inspired patterns created using our signature appliqué, intricate beadwork, embroidery and cutwork detailing adds both textural interest and creates powerful imagery. The overall effect is a modern interpretation of retro inspirations, and couldn’t feel fresher in the heat of the summer sun.

I have a degree in business management. The business of fashion is a difficult one, designers like myself have to constantly reconcile and temper our creativity with sound and logical reasoning. To this effect my degree has helped in developing NK both as a brand and a business.

We are still a very young brand, this coming May will mark our 1 year anniversary, so we’re still defining our brand identity. However, from the very beginning we had a clear vision. We wanted to make products that have timeless appeal; so the fabrics had to be luxurious and pure, the finishing impeccable, the silhouettes elegant and styling classic but with a modern, youthful spirit. This defines our house code, which is at the heart of every decision we make.

We’ve been very lucky to have created a few pieces that have become our signatures. The gota weave, applique and cut work detailing have become discreet signifiers which signal the label to people who are in the know without being too overt.
