A farmer from Sikar district in Rajasthan, India, has developed a unique multicoloured variety of corn that is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. His innovation demonstrates how creativity and natural farming can make agriculture both profitable and sustainable.
Sanjay Yadav, a farmer from Piprali village, abandoned chemical farming in 2012 and adopted organic methods. He began using traditional techniques like homemade compost and drip irrigation to maintain soil health and grow toxin-free crops. These methods also help command higher prices in the market.
Yadav’s breakthrough came after attending a workshop at the Agricultural Research Centre in Fatehpur. There, he learned about hybrid and improved seeds, which inspired him to experiment with corn. He cross-pollinated seeds from different varieties—white, yellow, light red, and dark red—to create a visually striking crop. The resulting cobs feature grains in white, yellow, and red, giving them a vibrant and gift-like appearance.
The multicoloured corn is not only visually appealing but also rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants. Yadav sells the cobs directly in the market, where they fetch prices of up to Rs200 each. He has also applied for a patent for the new variety and plans to make it available to other farmers, helping them increase income through innovative organic farming.

In addition to corn, Yadav has successfully experimented with radishes. By growing red radishes organically instead of the conventional white variety, he achieved better market returns. While white radishes sell for around Rs40 per kilogram, his red radishes fetch up to Rs60 per kilogram.
Yadav emphasizes that organic farming not only increases profits but also preserves soil fertility over time. His work highlights the potential for farmers to innovate using natural techniques, creating crops that are both nutritious and marketable. This approach offers a model for sustainable farming practices that benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment alike.
