The Sindh government has announced the release of a new Pakistani film, Mera Lyari, as a response to the Indian movie Dhurandhar, which sparked criticism for its portrayal of Pakistan and Karachi’s Lyari area. Sindh Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the upcoming film will present a positive and authentic image of Lyari.
The controversy began after Dhurandhar depicted Lyari as a violent and lawless zone. This portrayal drew strong reactions from Pakistanis, especially Lyari residents, who called it misleading and politically motivated. Many criticized the film as propaganda that reinforces harmful stereotypes about Pakistan.
Mera Lyari Highlights Culture and Identity
Sharjeel Inam Memon shared on social media platform X that Lyari represents culture, peace, talent, and resilience rather than violence. He emphasized that Mera Lyari will showcase the real spirit of the area and counter the negative image created by Dhurandhar.
The minister confirmed that the film will release next month. He described Lyari as a place of peace, prosperity, and pride, adding that the government supports creative projects reflecting Pakistan’s true identity. He also shared official posters of the film, attracting widespread attention online.

The project was previously titled Behnaz but was renamed Mera Lyari to better reflect its central theme. The film focuses on the area’s sports culture, community life, and resilience, elements often ignored in mainstream portrayals.
Response to Dhurandhar
Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh as an Indian intelligence officer and Arjun Rampal as a Pakistani agent. It presents Lyari as a conflict zone, a depiction widely criticized for lacking realism and cultural sensitivity. Since its release, the film has faced backlash across Pakistani social media platforms.
The announcement of Mera Lyari received largely positive responses. Many users expressed excitement and praised the initiative as a necessary cultural response. Some viewers urged filmmakers to keep the storytelling concise and impactful to reach international audiences effectively.
With government backing and a strong creative team, Mera Lyari aims to reclaim the narrative around one of Karachi’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods. The film is expected to spark further discussion on representation, cinema, and national image when it releases.
