Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan To be Honored At Locarno Film Festival 2024

The Locarno Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious and longest-running film festivals, is set to commence on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Established in 1946, the festival is renowned for its focus on auteur cinema and is held annually in the picturesque town of Locarno, Switzerland. The event, which runs until August 17, 2024, takes place on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the Italian-speaking Ticino region. Films are showcased in the iconic Piazza Grande, an open-air venue that accommodates up to 8,000 moviegoers and features one of the largest screens in the world.

This year’s festival promises to be a grand celebration of cinematic artistry with a host of prestigious awards honoring some of the most influential figures in the film industry. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, acclaimed director Jane Campion, renowned filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, and celebrated actress Irène Jacob are among the distinguished honorees.

Honoring Cinema Legends

Shah Rukh Khan, a global icon in Indian cinema, will be awarded the Pardo alla Carriera on Saturday. This accolade recognizes individuals whose artistic contributions have significantly redefined cinema. At 58, Khan’s remarkable career has left an indelible mark on Bollywood. Festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro praised Khan’s extensive and innovative work, stating, “The wealth and breadth of his contribution to Indian cinema is unprecedented. Khan is a king who has never lost touch with the audience that crowned him.”

Jane Campion, a trailblazing New Zealand filmmaker, will receive the Leopard of Honour. Known for her groundbreaking work, including “The Piano” (1993) and “The Power of the Dog” (2021), which earned her an Academy Award, Campion’s films are celebrated for their complex characters and profound exploration of human nature. Nazzaro lauded her as a filmmaker who has achieved “one of the undisputed pinnacles of contemporary filmmaking.”

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Cuarón, acclaimed for his films “Gravity” (2013) and “Roma” (2018), has continually reinvented himself as an artist. Nazzaro commended Cuarón for his innovative contributions to cinema, noting his ability to “reinvent himself with each new film.”

French-Swiss actress Irène Jacob will receive the Leopard Club Award, recognizing her work that has profoundly impacted the collective imagination. Jacob’s performances in “The Double Life of Veronique” (1991) and “Three Colours: Red” (1994) have solidified her place as a significant figure in cinema.

In addition to these awards, Stacey Sher, the esteemed US film producer known for her work on “Pulp Fiction,” “Get Shorty,” and “Django Unchained,” will be honored with the Raimondo Rezzonico Award. This accolade is given for major achievements in international film production.

A Rich Program of Films

The 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival features a diverse program with 225 films, including 104 world premieres and 15 debut movies. The festival’s top honor, the Golden Leopard, will be awarded to one of seventeen films competing for the prize. Previous winners of this prestigious award include cinematic legends such as Roberto Rossellini, John Ford, and Stanley Kubrick. The Golden Leopard comes with a prize fund of 75,000 Swiss francs ($87,400), shared between the director and producer.

The festival will also feature a retrospective celebrating the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures, showcasing the studio’s rich cinematic legacy.
