Today marks the inauguration of the inaugural Over 40s Cricket Global Cup, featuring a thrilling opening match between Pakistan Veterans and the USA. The tournament’s trophy presentation and a press briefing took place in Karachi, under the leadership of Fawad Ijaz, Chairman of the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA).
Fawad Ijaz emphasized the historical significance of hosting this prominent veterans’ cricket tournament in Pakistan for the very first time. He provided reassurance that comprehensive security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all participating international teams.
He went on to clarify that the tournament was initially named the World Cup but had to be renamed as the Global Cup following objections from the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, it has now received official ICC approval.
Fawad Ijaz also addressed the absence of the Indian team, attributing it to visa-related challenges faced by Indian players. The tournament boasts a diverse lineup of teams, including Australia, the West Indies, Canada, Hong Kong, the USA, and the UAE. Karachi has been selected as the host city for a total of 36 matches to be held across five different venues, with Pakistan playing all their matches at the National Bank Stadium.
