Corona Virus (COVID-19) in Pakistan
- Pakistan has confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders.
- The Pakistan federal government established an inter-ministerial committee headed by the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for Health and Population to formulate and implement a comprehensive strategy to tackle the virus’ threat.
- Flights to and from to China, Iran, and Italy have been suspended. Pakistan’s federal and provincial authorities initiated enhanced traveler screening at points of entry.
- Pakistan closed its land borders with Iran and Afghanistan and delayed the planned spring opening of its snow-covered land border with China.
- The Pakistan federal government closed schools and madrasas until April 5, and banned public events, including the March 23 Pakistan Day parade.
- Some regional governments are placing restrictions on public venues including restaurants and shopping centers.
- The Ministry of Health and Population and the Ministry of Commerce imposed a ban on the import of animals from China that can carry zoonotic diseases.
- The federal government announced that it will not evacuate Pakistani citizens from China.
- Effective March 17, U.S. Embassy Islamabad and U.S. Consulate General Karachi ceased all routine visa services for both immigrant and non-immigrant visas until further notice. American citizen services will continue as normal at U.S. Embassy Islamabad and U.S. Consulates General Karachi and Lahore.
Entry and Exit Requirements
- Effective March 21, Pakistan will require all international arriving passengers to provide a copy of a Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test result for COVID-19 conducted during the 24-hour period prior to boarding the flight.
- Passengers will be required to present original test results which include their name and passport number.
- This requirement accompanies the current submission requirement of a completed health declaration form at the point of arrival responding to specific questions regarding recent travel and health conditions.
- Limited international air travel continues to operate out of the Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports. International routings to the United States have been reduced.
- Pakistan’s federal and provincial governments deployed health staff to major points of entry to screen all incoming passengers.
Quarantine Information
- Any person showing symptoms of COVID-19 infection will be taken into quarantine at designated government medical facilities. While in quarantine, samples will be taken from potentially infected persons and submitted to a designated laboratory for analysis.
