The United States has unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in military aviation. A highly advanced AI-driven unmanned fighter jet known as Fury, developed by Anduril Industries, a leading defense technology company.
Unlike traditional manned aircraft, Fury operates autonomously, capable of executing complex combat missions without a human pilot on board. This cutting-edge drone is designed to operate either independently or in coordination with crewed fighter jets like the F-35 and upcoming F-47 models, dramatically changing the dynamics of air combat.
Fury, officially designated as the YFQ-44A, is a key component of the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) initiative. Powered by Anduril’s AI system called Lattice, Fury processes real-time battlefield data to identify threats. It maneuver safely, and carry out precision strikes with minimal human intervention. Commanders provide strategic objectives, while the AI autonomously manages flight and combat tactics.

Cost efficiency is a major advantage of Fury: it uses a commercially available jet engine, which helps keep production costs between $25 million and $30 million per unit, significantly less than the $400 million price tag of an F-35 fighter jet. Its modular framework also allows for rapid upgrades, with interchangeable weapons systems and sensors tailored to specific mission requirements.
The drone has entered ground testing as of May 2025, with flight trials slated to begin later this year. The U.S. Air Force aims to deploy drones like Fury by the end of this decade, seeking to augment manned squadrons with AI-driven support aircraft. Anduril is competing alongside General Atomics for production contracts, with final decisions expected by fiscal year 2026.
The Pentagon’s recent $642 million contract award to Anduril for drone defense systems underscores the growing confidence in autonomous military technology.
