Aamir Khan Productions and Kiran Rao react to the plagiarism allegations against Laapataa Ladies. The movie has faced multiple accusations of copying other films. Social media users claim that the film is similar to the Arabic movie Burqa City (2019). Additionally, Bollywood director Ananth Mahadevan accuses the filmmakers of stealing from his 1999 TV movie Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol.
In response to the allegations, screenwriter Biplab Goswami shares a statement. He confirms that he wrote the entire story for Laapataa Ladies. The original title of the story was Two Brides, which he registered with the Screenwriters Association in 2014. Goswami explains that the concept of mistaken identities due to veils is a classic storytelling device. He mentions that famous writers like William Shakespeare and Rabindranath Tagore used this form in their works.
Goswami defends the originality of the movie. He states that the story, characters, dialogues, and scenes are all unique and based on years of research. Goswami emphasizes that the script reflects his deep understanding of gender inequality, rural power structures, and male chauvinism in both Indian and global contexts. He strongly denies all plagiarism claims and says these allegations undermine his efforts and the filmmaking team’s hard work.
Goswami also describes the journey of how Laapataa Ladies was developed from his original script. He reveals that the script titled Two Brides won the runner-up award at the Cinestaan Storytellers Competition in 2018. The screenplay had been registered by Goswami with the Screenwriters Association on July 3, 2014. The story revolves around a groom mistakenly bringing home the wrong bride due to a veil, a plot point central to Laapataa Ladies.
Aamir Khan Productions supports Goswami’s statement and shares it on their official Instagram account. Director Kiran Rao also posts a picture of the original Two Brides storyline registered in 2014, further proving the originality of the film’s content.
