A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey early Tuesday, October 28, 2025, triggering panic among residents across several cities.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake’s epicenter was recorded in Sindirgi, a district in Balikesir province, at a shallow depth of just under six kilometers.
The tremors were powerful enough to be felt in Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, causing buildings to sway and prompting thousands to rush into the streets for safety.
No Fatalities Reported, 22 Injured
Authorities confirmed that three previously damaged buildings and a two-story shop collapsed during the earthquake. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities, though 22 people sustained injuries, mainly due to panic and falls while fleeing their homes.
Rescue and emergency teams swiftly deploy to assist affected residents. Temporary shelters set up in mosques, schools, and sports halls. To accommodate those unwilling to return home amid ongoing aftershocks. Many families chose to spend the night outdoors as smaller tremors continued across the region.
Sindirgi had already experienced a 6.1-magnitude quake in August, raising alarms about the district’s seismic instability. Experts are urging locals to stay alert and follow safety guidelines, warning that aftershocks could continue in the coming days.
