Pakistan is finally opening sea routes for international passenger travel. The country has approved its first ferry service connecting Pakistan to the UAE, Iran, and other Gulf countries.
The license was granted to Sea Keepers, an international ferry operator. The decision followed a high-level meeting of Pakistan’s Licensing Committee. Officials from the Maritime Affairs, Defense, Interior, and Foreign Affairs Ministries were present.
The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, called this a historic step. He said it supports Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to boost regional connectivity and economic activity through sea transport.
Pakistan Ferry Service to UAE and Iran to Launch Soon
Initially, the ferry service will run from Karachi and Gwadar. These ports will serve as starting points for routes to Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The ferries will be modern, affordable, and include basic travel amenities.
This service will reduce travel costs, especially for workers and religious pilgrims. It is expected to serve thousands each year, including those traveling to Iraq and Iran for Ziyarat. The new option will also take pressure off road routes and air travel.
The government plans to expand these routes based on demand and future agreements. The initiative also supports Pakistan’s larger goal to develop its blue economy and maritime infrastructure.

The ferry service is part of the country’s National Maritime Policy. It reflects Pakistan’s commitment to improving sea-based travel, trade, and tourism. With this launch, Pakistan is stepping into a new era of regional connectivity.
