Pakistan will launch 5G services around Eid al Fitr, marking a major step in its digital growth. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has completed key steps, allowing telecom companies to move forward with the rollout.
Officials will hold a license issuing ceremony at the Prime Minister House. Telecom companies that secured 5G spectrum will receive formal approval to begin operations. Senior government officials and industry leaders will attend the event.
Government prepares for official 5G launch
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the ceremony as chief guest. Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja and PTA officials will also join. Other cabinet members are expected to be present.
Telecom companies have already met the main requirements. Each company submitted a bank guarantee of 15 million dollars. This step completed the financial process needed for license approval.
Companies have also finished most of their technical preparations. They can now begin the rollout without major delays.
5G rollout to begin in major cities
After receiving licenses, telecom companies will start 5G services in Islamabad and other large cities. In the first phase, users in selected urban areas will get access to the new network.
Companies will expand the service step by step. More cities and regions will join the network over time.
The license terms require each company to install 1000 new telecom sites. At least 200 of these sites must serve remote and low coverage areas. This plan aims to improve connectivity across the country.
Spectrum auction and future impact
The PTA recently completed the 5G spectrum auction. Authorities sold 480 MHz out of 597 MHz available. The auction is expected to generate about 510 million dollars for the government.
The launch of 5G will improve internet speed and network quality. It can support sectors like online business, digital banking, and healthcare services. Faster connections may also help new technologies grow in Pakistan.
