Flash Flood and Snowfall Alert Issued for Northern Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for flash floods and heavy snowfall across Northern Pakistan from January 21 to 24. A strong western disturbance is expected to affect upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), increasing water flow in streams and tributaries connected to the Kabul River.

Areas at Risk

According to the NDMA, heavy rainfall and snowfall may trigger flash floods in the following districts:

  • KP: Swat, Chitral, Buner, Shangla, Upper and Lower Dir, Malakand, Bajaur, Mardan, Swabi
  • Hazara Division: Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Haripur, Kolai-Palas, Kohistan
  • Azad Kashmir: Multiple vulnerable districts

Authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and monitor these areas closely.

Recent Weather Conditions

Several areas have already experienced heavy rain and snowfall:

  • Chitral, Kalam, Malam Jabba, Patan Kohistan, Upper Dir recorded significant precipitation
  • Temperatures: Kalam (-4°C), Parachinar (-4°C), Upper Dir (0°C), Chitral (1°C), Peshawar (5°C)
  • Snowfall: Lowari Tunnel (5 inches), Chitral Kalash Valleys (Bamburet, 3 inches), Madak Lasht (4 inches), Beghusht (5 inches)

Other locations in Upper Chitral, such as Shandur, Laspur, and Yarkhun, have also seen snowfall. Authorities advise travelers to use snow chains on mountain roads like the Lowari Tunnel.

Punjab Forecast and Precautions

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reports heavy rain and snowfall in Murree, Galiyat, and nearby areas, expected until January 23.

  • 13 facilitation centers have been set up in Murree for tourists
  • Authorities urge travelers to check weather conditions and avoid high-risk areas
  • Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed instructed departments to remain on high alert 24/7 and provide guidance to prevent accidents
