The upcoming ICC India Pakistan Women’s World Cup, scheduled for October 5 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is already stirring controversy before the first ball is bowled. Concerns have emerged that India may once again mix politics with sport, echoing the unsportsmanlike behaviour displayed during the recent Asia Cup.
Handshake Drama Looms Over the Clash
Indian sports journalist Boria Majumdar took to social media to warn fans of what could unfold in the high-stakes women’s fixture. According to his post, “The India-Pakistan game in Colombo will not be another cricket match. It will be a continuation of the Asia Cup, and the only thing that changes is the gender.”
Majumdar hinted at the likelihood of Indian players refusing to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts. Predicting “no handshakes, lots of off-field drama, and heightened stakes.” His statement has sparked heated debate, with many fans expressing disappointment. That political tensions could overshadow the spirit of the game.

The concerns stem from the Asia Cup 2025. Where India defeated Pakistan in the final but faced global criticism for politicising cricket. During the tournament, Indian players repeatedly refused post-match handshakes with Pakistani cricketers, sparking outrage. The team even declined to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi due to his nationality. While politically charged comments in press conferences only deepened the controversy.
As the India Pakistan Women’s World Cup clash approaches, fans worry the focus may once again shift from cricket to politics. For many, the anticipation of the game is now clouded by questions about whether India will uphold sportsmanship or repeat the actions that tarnished the Asia Cup.
The October 5 showdown promises not just cricketing intensity but also off-field drama that could dominate headlines worldwide.
