New Hotel Construction Banned Near Hunza’s Lakes

Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan have issued a complete ban on the construction of new hotels near Hunza’s three major lakes. The Hunza hotel ban also applies to expansion projects of existing hotels in the surrounding area. The decision aims to protect the region’s fragile ecosystem from overdevelopment and environmental harm.

According to officials, the move responds to the growing pressure tourism has placed on natural resources, particularly around Attabad Lake, Borith Lake, and Rush Lake. These popular destinations attract thousands of visitors each year, but unchecked hotel growth has raised concerns about water pollution, deforestation, and land degradation.

Environmental Concerns Drive Protection Measures

Gilgit-Baltistan’s environment department, in coordination with local administration, will oversee the enforcement of the hunza hotel ban. The goal is to balance tourism with sustainability. Officials stressed that while tourism brings economic benefits, it must not come at the cost of long-term environmental damage.

Local communities have also raised concerns about waste management and limited access to clean water due to the construction boom. These complaints further supported the government’s decision to act.

Existing hotels and guesthouses will be allowed to continue operations, but any new developments or vertical expansions are now prohibited within the designated buffer zones around the lakes.

Authorities say this move is part of a broader plan to introduce eco-friendly tourism models in the northern areas. Future infrastructure projects in Hunza will focus on sustainability, local benefit, and preserving the region’s natural beauty for future generations.
