Pakistan to Introduce New Currency Notes with Advanced Security Features

Pakistan is preparing to introduce newly designed currency notes with modern features and stronger security measures. The State Bank of Pakistan has completed its initial work and is now waiting for approval from the federal cabinet to move forward with the printing process. The move aims to make currency safer, more durable, and harder to counterfeit.

Officials have confirmed that all existing banknotes from Rs.10 to Rs.5,000 will remain valid until the new notes are officially launched. The central bank has also advised the public to ignore unverified posts and rumors circulating on social media. Any update about new currency designs will only be shared through official announcements.

The Pakistan Security Printing Corporation has stated that the new notes will include advanced security features to prevent forgery. These features are expected to meet international standards and reflect modern printing technology. However, the final designs have not yet been formally handed over for printing.

According to reports, the printing process will begin only after cabinet approval. Once permission is granted, it will take at least two months to print the new notes. The State Bank is currently reviewing whether the currency will be released in phases or if all denominations will be introduced at the same time.

Senior Manager Printing Amir Shams confirmed that detailed consultations have already taken place between the State Bank and the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation. He said both institutions have discussed technical aspects, timelines, and security requirements. However, the final decision rests with the federal cabinet.

What to Expect from the New Currency Notes

The upcoming currency notes are expected to feature updated designs and enhanced security elements. These may include improved watermarks, security threads, and color shifting inks. The goal is to reduce counterfeiting and improve public confidence in the national currency.

The new designs are also likely to reflect Pakistan’s cultural identity and heritage. While the State Bank has not shared visual details, officials have hinted that the look will be more modern and aligned with global currency standards.

Experts believe that updated banknotes will support economic stability by strengthening trust in physical currency. Stronger security features also help protect businesses and consumers from financial losses linked to fake notes.

Current Legal Tender

Under Section 25 of SBP ACT, 1956, following denominations of the banknotes are current legal tender across Pakistan:

At the same time, the State Bank has stressed that the introduction of new notes does not mean the old ones will become invalid. All current currency will continue to be legal tender until an official replacement plan is announced. This step will ensure a smooth transition for the public.

The central bank plans to release its official printing schedule later this year. Once the cabinet gives approval, the public will be informed about the rollout process and timelines. The State Bank will also guide banks and businesses on how to handle the exchange.

This development comes at a time when many countries are upgrading their currency systems to fight financial crime and improve durability. Pakistan’s move follows the same global trend of strengthening currency security.

For now, citizens are advised to stay alert and rely only on verified information from the State Bank of Pakistan. Any changes regarding currency notes will be announced through official channels. The new currency notes are expected to be released later this year if approval is granted, marking an important step toward a safer and more modern financial system.
