Karachi woke up to an unexpected turn of events today as the Sindh government declared a public holiday following heavy rainfall across the city. The relentless monsoon showers left roads flooded, power disrupted, and transportation in chaos, forcing authorities to take urgent measures.
Karachi Declares Rain Emergency After Heavy Downpour
According to official notifications, all public and private schools in Karachi are closed today. The announcement came after non-stop rainfall caused waterlogging in several areas, leaving citizens stranded and facing long hours of power outages.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded some of the heaviest rainfall in Gulshan-i-Hadeed at 170 millimetres, followed by other localities including Airport Old Area, Jinnah Terminal, and Nazimabad. Streets such as Sharea Faisal turned into rivers as people struggled to make their way through the city.
In response, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation activated emergency cells, cancelled leave for essential staff, and mobilized municipal services, the fire brigade, and Urban Search and Rescue teams to manage the crisis.
Law enforcement is also on high alert. Orders were issued for police officers to remain in their areas, ensure traffic flow, and provide immediate assistance. Citizens were advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep away from power installations to prevent accidents.
Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani emphasized that resources are being used to clear highways and ensure water drainage. Meanwhile, Governor Kamran Tessori set up a 24-hour emergency helpline at 1366, assuring citizens that immediate aid will be available.
