Islamabad is taking a bold step to modernize how vehicles are registered in the capital. The Excise and Taxation Department has announced that it will now follow a new Islamabad vehicle registration inspired by the United States.
This major update means that registration numbers will no longer be tied to the vehicle. Instead, they will be linked directly to the owner. The change applies to both new and existing vehicles.
What’s Changing and Why It Matters
Under the new system, every vehicle owner will receive a unique registration number. This number will remain assigned to them permanently. If the owner decides to sell their vehicle, the registration number will be deactivated. The new buyer will then receive a different number assigned to their name.
This policy marks a big shift from the traditional method where each vehicle had a separate number regardless of ownership. The updated system allows better tracking of ownership and supports law enforcement in ensuring road safety.

Owners will also have the option to retain their number for up to one year after selling their vehicle. If they do not use the number during that time, it will be revoked and reassigned.
According to the Director General of Excise and Taxation Islamabad, the goal of this new system is to increase transparency and improve the overall user experience. It also aligns Islamabad with international practices, where such systems have already proven successful.
This initiative follows the city’s recent moves to digitize services and offer citizens more control and clarity in administrative processes. With this change, Islamabad joins a growing list of regions adopting smarter, more secure vehicle registration frameworks.
