ChatGPT is stepping into a new era of collaboration as OpenAI begins pilot testing ChatGPT Group Chats feature in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. The update allows multiple users to join the same conversation where ChatGPT participates like a shared assistant. The goal is simple: make it easier for teams, families and friends to plan, organize and work together in real time.
The new feature creates a shared space where everyone can interact with ChatGPT simultaneously. Users can use it to plan group trips, suggest home renovation ideas or find restaurants that suit everyone’s tastes. Students or coworkers can also rely on it to structure reports, review notes and streamline team projects using shared files and uploads.
How the ChatGPT Group Chats Feature Works
Starting a group conversation is straightforward. Users tap the people icon in the upper right corner of the screen while inside a new or existing chat. If they start it from an existing conversation, ChatGPT automatically generates a fresh thread to keep earlier messages private. Participants can be added manually or through an invite link, and up to 20 people can join. Each member must set up a profile with a name, username and photo.
ChatGPT’s group chats carry over all tools from one on one conversations including file uploads, search and image generation. Anyone with the invite link can bring others onboard unless the creator limits this option. Members can mute or remove participants, although the original creator cannot be removed. If someone under 18 joins the chat, ChatGPT automatically restricts sensitive content for the entire group, ensuring safe interaction.

The Technology Behind It
The feature runs on GPT 5.1 Auto, a smart model selector that decides which model fits the conversation best based on user prompts and plan type. OpenAI says the assistant has been trained to follow natural group dynamics, choosing when to speak and when to stay quiet. Users can even call ChatGPT directly by mentioning its name inside the conversation.
OpenAI also confirms that group chats stay separate from private one on one chats. Personal ChatGPT memory is not shared across participants, and additional user control options are currently being explored. Parents and guardians can fully disable the feature for minors using parental control settings.
For now, the group chat feature is available only in four regions and supports both free and paid ChatGPT users. OpenAI aims to refine the experience through feedback from early testers before expanding the feature globally.
