Why 5G Is Not Working on iPhones and Samsung Phones in Pakistan

Many smartphone users in Pakistan have reported that they cannot access 5G services despite the recent launch of next generation networks. The issue has raised concerns among users who own premium devices but still see only 4G connectivity.

Early findings suggest that the problem does not lie in the hardware of these devices. Instead, software limitations and carrier level approvals are currently restricting access to 5G networks.

Device restrictions and approval process

Major smartphone brands such as Apple, Google, and Samsung control how 5G works on their devices. Telecom operators must receive official approval from these companies before enabling 5G services on their networks.

Apple uses carrier bundles in its iOS system. If a telecom operator does not receive approval, the iPhone hides the 5G option and limits connectivity to 4G. Since 5G in Pakistan is still in an early phase, local telecom companies are waiting for official support from Apple.

Google follows a similar approach for its Pixel devices. The company applies a firmware level whitelist, which means 5G only works when a carrier receives certification for that specific region.

Samsung devices also rely on a system that depends on regional settings. The company uses a country specific code that determines network compatibility. If a device connects to an uncertified network or comes from another region, it may not support 5G.

Limited rollout and ongoing updates

The timing of the 5G launch has also contributed to the issue. Telecom companies completed the spectrum auction and rollout preparations within a short period. This left limited time to secure approvals from global smartphone manufacturers.

As a result, many devices remain restricted even though they support 5G technology. Some brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo appear less restrictive, allowing broader compatibility in certain cases.

Major telecom operators in Pakistan, including Jazz, Zong, and Ufone, have acknowledged the issue. They have stated that they are working to expand 5G compatibility across more devices. Jazz has specifically confirmed that 5G does not yet work on iPhones but efforts are underway to resolve this.

Users with premium smartphones have expressed frustration, especially those who expected immediate access after the 5G launch. Many of these users continue to rely on 4G services for now.

There is currently no confirmed timeline for full compatibility. Telecom companies continue to coordinate with device manufacturers to enable 5G support through future updates.

Note for readers

This report is based on publicly available information, user experiences, and statements from telecom operators. Updates may follow as companies release official confirmations or technical changes.

Until broader support becomes available, most users in Pakistan will continue using existing 4G networks while 5G infrastructure and compatibility continue to develop.
