Bangladeshi Model Arrest: Meghna Alam has recently been arrested under the Special Powers Act. She faces allegations of spreading false information about a Saudi Arabian diplomat. Police claim her actions were intended to harm diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia.
Alam had previously posted updates on Facebook, claiming that a foreign diplomat tried to silence her with the help of law enforcement. These statements reportedly triggered the investigation into her actions.
On April 9, Meghna Alam’s arrest took place after she streamed a Facebook live video. In the video, she shows officers entering her home in Dhaka. During the 12-minute livestream, she pleads with the officers, assuring them that she would cooperate.
Despite her plea, the police take her into custody, and a court orders her 30-day detention in Kashimpur jail.
The model’s arrest has raised several concerns. Many question the circumstances surrounding her detention. Alam’s father, Badrul Alam, suggests that her arrest follows a personal dispute with the former Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh.
He claims that Meghna had refused the ambassador’s marriage proposal. According to him, the ambassador already has a wife and children.
This incident is especially significant due to Saudi Arabia’s important role in Bangladesh. Saudi Arabia provides substantial financial and humanitarian aid to Bangladesh. The country also hosts over 2 million Bangladeshi workers, the largest foreign workforce in Saudi Arabia. Alam’s arrest thus has potential diplomatic implications, adding to the concerns over the case.
Amnesty Urges Action on Alam’s Detention
Amnesty International has expressed its concern regarding the use of the Special Powers Act. The organization has urged the authorities to either charge Alam with a recognizable crime or release her immediately.
The Special Powers Act, which has often been criticized for its broad and vague provisions, has led to worries about arbitrary detentions in Bangladesh.
Meghna Alam is a 30-year-old model, actress, and environmental advocate. She won Miss Earth Bangladesh in 2020 and has since worked on various social causes.
Alam serves as the chairperson of the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, an organization focused on societal welfare. She has also worked on addressing issues such as gender dynamics, climate change, and food security since her childhood.
